Test files anyone can download

Many of the files behind our main page are private, so nobody else can repeat those measurements. These 27 can be repeated. Each one is published by someone else, anyone can download it, and its SHA-256 checksum shows that you have exactly the bytes we measured. We don't host the files: the script below fetches each one from its publisher and checks it.

Size against time

Every program packed all 27 files with the settings shown. Each point is the total size against the total time.

Size against time, all 27 files Total size after compression, as a share of the original, against total compression time on a log scale. cmz beta 5: 46.5%, 20 min; cmz beta 4: 49.5%, 22 min; paq8pxd -s8: 44.1%, 2.6 h; paq8px -8: 50.8%, 3.7 h; paq8pxd -f8: 67.1%, 2.6 min; 7-Zip Ultra: 67.6%, 9 s; zpaq -m5: 64.2%, 3.2 min; xz -9e: 70.8%, 19 s. 40% 45% 50% 55% 60% 65% 70% 75% 6 s 1 min 10 min 100 min Total time to compress all 27 files (log scale) Total size, share of the original paq8pxd -s844.1% · 2.6 h paq8px -850.8% · 3.7 h paq8pxd -f867.1% · 2.6 min 7-Zip Ultra67.6% · 9 s zpaq -m564.2% · 3.2 min xz -9e70.8% · 19 s cmz beta 546.5% · 20 min cmz beta 449.5% · 22 min

cmz beta 5: 46.5% in 20 min. It is smaller than paq8px (50.8%) and about 11 times faster. paq8pxd in its slow mode packs tighter (44.1%) and takes 8 times as long.

paq8px and paq8pxd are research compressors, the strongest known family of this kind. They run from the command line on one file at a time. To save a day, paq8pxd -s8 and paq8px ran two at a time; their times here are corrected by the measured slowdown, about 18%.

7-Zip, xz and zpaq are everyday archivers: done in seconds or minutes, but they leave 64–71% of the original, because most of these files are already compressed. The empty circles are the fast mode of paq8pxd and the previous cmz beta.

The files and what cmz makes of them

Result = size after compression as a share of the original, so smaller is better. Each file was packed, unpacked again and compared with the original byte by byte. Sizes are exact byte counts, so you can compare your own compressor directly.

Times are wall-clock time on one PC (AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 6 cores, Windows 11), one file at a time; cmz uses several cores on large files. cmz ran with its default settings, the same ones the program uses when you pick Compress with cmz.

Download and check

Get the same files

The script makes a folder called cmz-test-files, downloads each file from the address in the list and prints OK or DIFFERENT for each one. Files that are already there and match are skipped, so you can run it again at any time.

Windows

Save get-test-files.ps1, then run it in PowerShell from the same folder:

powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File .\get-test-files.ps1

Tested on Windows 11. It is written to run on Windows 7 too, with the PowerShell that comes with it. A Windows 7 without updates may not be able to open the secure (TLS 1.2) connections most of these sites require; the script then says so, and Windows Management Framework 5.1 from Microsoft fixes it.

Linux, macOS, Git Bash

Save get-test-files.sh, then run:

bash get-test-files.sh

Needs curl, sha256sum or shasum, and unzip or bsdtar.

The files take 64.5 MB. The script downloads about 125.4 MB, because sao comes out of the 68 MB Silesia corpus zip, which it deletes afterwards.
